CHERRY BROWNIES FROM SCRATCH
I came up with this brownie recipe after being overwhelmed with cherries on our tree this year. It has the taste of a chocolate-covered cherry.

CHOCOLATE-CHERRY BROWNIES
If you love the classic flavor combination of rich chocolate and sweet cherries, you'll love these brownies! Chopped maraschino cherries and chocolate chips are stirred into the batter and added on top. So there's no shortage of chewy cherries and gooey melted chocolate when you bite in these brownies. And no one will guess these beauties started with a box of Betty Crocker™ Supreme original brownie mix, or that they only took 20 minutes to prep. Keep this recipe in your back pocket (and keep your pantry stocked with brownie mix) and you'll be ready for any party, bake sale or other occasion that pops up!

CHERRY AND CHOCOLATE BROWNIES
A decadent delight I found in a March 2005 issue of 'Fresh' magazine. This was a reader's recipe from Sharon Johnston, Mount Crosby, Queensland (Australia). There is a photograph on the same page as the recipe, and Sharon looks about 10 years old. The page bore the heading 'A slice of heaven.' I considered adding nuts to the recipe, but decided to leave it exactly as it was. Nuts would be the obvious addition here, possibly instead of the coconut. Or perhaps 1/2 cup of coconut and 1/2 cup chopped macadamia nuts. Hope you enjoy Sharon's slices of heaven!

CHOCOLATE CHERRY BARS
These tempting bars are simple to make with cherry pie filling, crunchy almonds and chocolate chips. I took them to a church supper and everyone wanted the recipe. Some people said the sweet treats reminded them of chocolate-covered cherries. -Tina Dierking, Skohegan, Maine

FROM-SCRATCH CHERRY BROWNIES
I didn't see any recipes for cherry brownies that don't use pie filling or box mix, so I came up with my own. The cherries make the brownies very moist and add subtle fruit flavor. I bet you could use other canned or cooked fruits in this (berries, peaches, pears) with good effect. The base brownie recipe comes from "The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery" ca. 1949 and it's still a super recipe.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- Grease a 9" square pan.
- Melt unsweetened chocolate and butter in the microwave.
- Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk briefly to aerate (could sift, but I find it messier).
- In a separate bowl, beat eggs and vanilla until fluffy. Add sugar in three additions, beating well between additions.
- Add the butter/chocolate mixture to the egg/sugar mixture and mix thoroughly.
- Add the wet mixture to the dry. Stir very gently just until combined.
- Add cherries and chips and stir just until distributed.
- Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle top with nuts if desired.
- Bake for 20-30 minutes. The edges should pull away from the pan slightly when they're done. Don't overbake.
- Note: The original recipe says 20 minutes. Mine took 30. I can't tell if my oven's off or the cherries are causing the baking time to be longer.
