Steps:
- Start by browning the ground beef in a large pot over medium-high heat. Drain off the fat.
- Add in the green peppers and onions. Stir, and then add 1 cup water, the ketchup and garlic. Stir it around to combine, and then add the brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, and hot sauce, Worcestershire, salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine, and then cover and simmer over medium-low heat, about 20 minutes.
- To serve, spread the rolls with the butter and brown them on a griddle or in a skillet. Spoon a good amount of the meat mixture onto the bottom roll, and then top with the other half. Serve with chips, salad or just enjoy it by itself.
SLOPPY JOES
Sloppy joes are a simple, American staple the whole family can get stuck into. Add a dash of spicy chipotle or smoky barbecue sauce to the minced beef filling for some zing.

Steps:
- Heat the oil in a deep frying pan, then fry the onion, pepper and garlic for 8-10 mins until softened. Add the mince, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as you go, and stir until it browns all over. Tip in the tomatoes and chipotle, or barbecue sauce, and add a little seasoning. Simmer for 10-15 mins until the sauce has thickened.
- Put the cheese slices on top of the mince and cover with a lid for 2 mins to let it melt into the sauce. Pile into the buns with the crispy onions, and lettuce on the side for scooping up the extra sauce.

SLOPPY TURKEY JOES
Note: This recipe method is written for children to follow, too. Adult helpers are referred to as GHs, or Grown Helpers.
Provided by Rachael Ray : Food Network
Categories main-dish
Time 30m
Yield 4 servings
Number Of Ingredients 12
Steps:
- Have a GH (grown helper) place a big skillet over medium high heat for you. Use some kitchen scissors to cut the turkey package open. Add some extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan in a nice, slow stream. Have the GH add the ground turkey to the pan, in case it spatters. Break the turkey up with a big wooden spoon as it starts to cook. If anyone touches the raw turkey, they should go wash their hands.
- If you are a really good chopper, using a small, sharp knife chop up some red onion. Remember when you are chopping to keep the fingers that are not holding the knife all tucked in and curled under. Have a GH help you. You need half a red onion chopped up small. Pull the seeds and white membrane and the top out of a half red bell pepper and chop that up small too. Add the veggies to the cooking meat and stir it all together.
- Next, mix in a small bowl: grill seasoning blend, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and the tomato sauce. This will make your special sauce. When all the ingredients are combined, pour the sauce evenly over the meat and stir everything together really well. Turn the heat down to simmer and cook the sloppy mixture for 10 minutes. Blow on a spoonful until cool and taste it to see if you need to adjust the seasoning.
- Have the GH help you serve. Place a bun bottom on a plate. Use a big ice cream scoop to get a pile of sloppy meat onto the bun. Put bun top in place and serve with vegetable sticks on the side and Cheese Fries.
- 1 sack frozen French fries, any brand or shape - crinkle cut, thin cut, steak cut, waffle fries - prepared to package directions
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 2 1/2 cups, (10-ounce) sack shredded yellow Cheddar
- 3 squirts ketchup, about 1/4 cup
- Have your GH (Grown Helper) put fries in oven on a cookie sheet. While fries are baking in the oven, have a GH place a sauce pot on the stove and heat it over medium heat. Add butter and melt it. Add the flour and stir. Cook butter and flour together for 1 minute or so. This is called "roux" (like Tiger and Roo with Pooh Bear) and it helps to thicken up sauces. Use a whisk to stir as the milk goes into the pot. Keep stirring until the milk gets thicker. Use a wooden spoon or heat-safe spatula to stir in the cheese. When all of the cheese melts, take the sauce off the heat and stir in 3 squirts of ketchup. This is your SECRET ingredient. When everyone asks what you put in your cheese sauce that makes it taste so good, just say milk and cheese, you can NEVER tell what secret ingredients you add! Tell your GH to keep the secret, too or they can never help you again!
- Pour the sauce over the fries or serve the sauce on the side if you like to dipping better.
- Yield: 4 to 6 servings

- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, onion and garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain.
- Whisk together the remaining ingredients to make the sauce. Add to the skillet with the beef, onion and garlic.
- Simmer uncovered over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly, until the mixture reaches desired consistency. You can keep the skillet covered if you like the sauce “sloppier.” If the sauce is too thick, gradually stir in a small amount of warm water or beef broth. If the sauce is too thin, gradually sift in a small amount of flour while stirring vigorously to thicken.

- MEAT: Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef and crumble using a wooden spoon. Allow the meat to cook for 3 minutes before adding the minced bell pepper, onions, garlic, and tomato paste and cooking for another 5 minutes.
- SIMMER: Then, add the remaining ingredients along with ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ cup of water and allow the mixture to start bubbling, then lower the heat to low, cover with a lid and cook for 20 minutes.
- FINISH: Remove the lid and give the sloppy Joe filling a stir. Then, kick the heat up to medium and continue cooking for 5-7 minutes or until the mixture thickens to your liking. If at any point the mixture dries out too much, just add a small splash of water to thin it back out. Taste and adjust with additional salt as needed (it just depends on how salty your tomato sauce and ketchup are, you may not even need anymore)
- SERVE: Place a big scoop of the sloppy joe mixture on buttered and toasted buns and serve with potato chips and pickles.

- Macaroni and Cheese. This dish is perfect for serving with sloppy joes because it can be served hot or cold. It’s a hearty, filling side dish that will please most people.
- Coleslaw. It is easy to make at home and goes well alongside the diverse range of flavors in this sandwich, even if you’re not crazy about cabbage. Choose your favorite dressing recipe, whip up some coleslaw (or buy a pre-made bag from the store.)
- Potato Salad or Sweet Potatoes. Potatoes are another excellent option for sides since they come mashed, cut into fries, boiled whole as new potatoes – whatever suits your fancy.
- Cornbread. This is one of the most popular side dishes of all time. You can make it in just five minutes with ingredients you probably already have on hand and serve alongside your sloppy joes.
- Cranberry sauce. The tartness from this condiment cuts through any richness present in the sandwich without overpowering its meaty taste. A good choice if your main dish has flavors like barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, or tomato paste which would otherwise clash with traditional cranberry sauces included corn syrup and sugar.
- Tzatziki. It’s a Mediterranean-style yogurt dip that is perfect for adding some tartness to Sloppy Joes. It also offers up an excellent way to cut through any flavors you might not enjoy in your Sloppy Joe, such as too much onion or garlic sauce.
- French fries. It’s one of America’s favorite side dishes. Most importantly, these fries are easy to make and don’t require a lot of ingredients. You can make them from scratch in your kitchen by boiling cut potatoes until soft, frying them up crisp, and adding salt right before taking them off the stovetop.
- Pasta Salad. This salad isn’t just for picnics. It has all those flavors you love – pasta, mayonnaise, onion, celery (and maybe even ham) so it helps add a new dimension of taste to your Sloppy Joes.
- French Onion Soup. This soup is delicious because it has a lot of depth in flavor, which will contrast against the simple tastes of Sloppy Joes but might also compliment them if you’re looking for a more savory dish.
