Steps:

  • Place racks in upper and lower thirds of oven and preheat to 350°F. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter, sugar, and honey in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in tahini, then add dry ingredients in 2 batches, beating after each addition until fully combined. Dough will be slightly sticky.
  • Place sesame seeds in a small bowl. Scoop out heaping tablespoons of dough (about 1 oz.) and roll into balls. Dip tops of balls in sesame seeds, pressing to adhere, and place, sesame side up, on 2 parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing about 2" apart. Bake cookies, rotating baking sheets halfway through, until golden brown, 13-15 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets (cookies will firm as they cool).

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons honey
3/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Combine flour and sugar in a bowl. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender-or work with your hands - until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Add anise oil (optional) small amount for it is very strong, to 1/2 cup of the milk and add to flour mixture. Gradually add more of the milk mixing until dough holds together.
  • Pull off small portions of dough and roll between palms of the hands into a roll about finger size. Roll in sesame seeds. Seeds stick better if put in sugared water and taken out and put on a clean lintless cloth. Roll on cloth with seeds, then flatten out too about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 2 inch strips, place on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove, cool completely, then store in an airtight container.

AUNT ANNE'S SESAME COOKIES

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and anise extract until well blended. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt; stir into the butter mixture until well incorporated. If you are using a stand mixer, let the dough mix for another minute to add lightness to the dough. The dough will be soft, but will hand roll easily.
  • Pinch off pieces of dough slightly smaller than a walnut, and roll them into small logs. Dip in milk, then roll in sesame seeds. Place cookies one inch apart on a cookie sheet. Cookies will not spread very much.
  • Bake for 17 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until bottom and sides of cookies are lightly toasted. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

VEGAN CHERRY BON-BON COOKIES

Taste of Home's Cherry Bon Bon cookies were a holiday and gift staple in my house--So imagine how I, now a vegan trying to inspire others to adopt a plant-based and cruelty free diet, felt daunted by the idea of not being able to continue my holiday traditions. So instead of giving it up, I put on my big girl pants and worked at that recipe until it was vegan, and not one of my non-vegan coworkers would be complaining that I deprived them of butter. It is important for a vegan recipe that you use VEGAN sugar-- most people don't know that standard granulated and powdered sugar is refined with animal bone char, therefore making it non-vegan. If you can't find vegan powdered sugar at your grocery store, opt for an equal amount of unrefined CANE sugar and pulverize it in your blender until it becomes a powder. (Worst comes to worst, order vegan powdered sugar online from a reputable source and have it sent to your doorstep.) When cooking for someone with a soy allergy, opt for almond milk. If allergic to almonds, you may also find rice and hemp milk work just as well.

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 2. Drain maraschino cherries in a collander, reserving the liquid in a small cup, bowl or jar. Dry off cherries with a paper towel, tossing around to remove all excess juice that may gather at the bottom of the collander. Set aside.
  • 3. In a large bowl, cream Earth Balance and vegan powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add soymilk and vanilla extract. In a seperate bowl combine flour and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture.
  • 4. Gather any loose moist crumbs with your hands and press together to form a ball of dough. Divide dough into 24 portions; shape each portion around a cherry. Try to handle lightly and as quick as possible to prevent your hands from getting greasy. Dough should fit around each cherry with no air bubbles inside. Pinch and smooth the dough together and roll around in palms. For a more perfect domed "bon-bon" shape, press cookie into a circle tablespoon, and remove gently to retain shape. Place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
  • 6. For glaze, combine the powdered sugar, melted Earth Balance and cherry juice until smooth. Drizzle over cookies. Dust with additional powdered sugar if desired.
