Steps:

  • Make the chili: In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, stir together the barbecue sauce, kidney beans, black beans, chili seasoning, brown sugar and mustard. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Meanwhile, make the hot dogs: Set up a grill or preheat a grill pan over medium heat. When ready to start cooking, brush the grates with vegetable oil. Place the hot dogs on the hot oiled grill and cook, turning occasionally, for 10 minutes or until heated through. Toast the buns on the grill, if desired. Put the hot dogs in the buns and top with the chili. Serve hot topped with the chopped onion.

1 cup barbecue sauce
1 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 15-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons chili seasoning mix
1 tablespoon packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
Vegetable oil, for brushing
8 all-beef hot dogs

BBQ HOT DOGS & BEANS

My mother made these BBQ hot dogs for years and I revised it by adding the beans and I tweaked some of the spices a little. This dish is very good with fried potatoes...oh I know... but can't we fudge a little once in awhile?

  • Heat a large (oven safe, if you don’t want to transfer) skillet over medium-low heat and add the bacon. Cook until it’s brown and crisp and most of the fat is rendered.
  • Stit in the onion, pepper and garlic. Cook, stirring often, until everything softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the vinegar, BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar until combined.
  • Stir in the baked beans directly from the can. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat. I suggest tasting the beans here and adding more salt, pepper or heat if desired. If you'd like, you can lay a few strips of bacon on top of the beans here too!
