CHRISTMAS TREE EDIBLE CENTERPIECE

I used a mix of cauliflower from the gardenia mix, broccoli and boccoflower for a contrast of color. I quickly blanched the broccoli and broccoflower heads very quickly (just seconds) in salted boiling water and the chilled to brighten the color! You'll need Styrofoam cone and toothpicks. I also used a platter that has a center with with a dip basin which is not really needed.

Steps:

  • Place foam on platter.
  • Using toothpicks secure lettuce on foam just to cover.
  • Starting with the largest broccoli and broccoflower heads place on foam starting at the base and work your way up securing with toothpicks.
  • Push 1/2 the carrots randomly into the foam.
  • Take the rest of the veggies cut into small pieces and fill in the empty spots and brighten up the tree. Using toothpicks only IF needed.
  • Mix the remaining carrots with the juice from the carrots, remaining vegetables with the juice from the gardenia mix and place around the base of the tree.
  • Top with the star.
  • Serve with a dip of choice.

4 lettuce leaves (optional)

1 slice carrot (cut in a star with a cookie cutter)

SHOW STOPPING CHRISTMAS TREE CENTERPIECE (EDIBLE)

This will stop people in their tracks at any Christmas party or buffet. You need a styrofoam tree (from the craft store). I got this idea from a Gooseberry Patch Christmas book about 10 years ago, and use this for any buffet or party we go to. You will also need a piece of cardboard, toothpicks and foil. Encourage guests to eat the "tree." They may not want to at first.

Steps:

  • Allow cream cheese to come to room temperature.
  • Cover stryrofoam tree base with plastic wrap. Pull tightly and make it smooth.
  • Using a frosting knife or spatula, cover the entire tree with cream cheese (not the bottom).
  • Layer ingredients starting at the bottom, one row per ingredient.
  • Stick a toothpick into the foam and attach the food item to the toothpick.
  • Make layers even
  • I usually start with cherry tomatoes on the bottom since they are tought enough to hold the weight of the next item.
  • Layer the foods in the color combination you like.
  • You may repeat layers.
  • cover any holes with parsley.
  • Buy an inexpensive small star for the top.
  • Refrigerate until serving.
  • Cut a 22" piece of cardboard.
  • Cover it with foil.
  • Put the tree in the center and scatter crackers and a couple of bowls of cocktail sauce at the base.
  • Encourage guests to eat the tree. They may not want to "ruin" it. Please tell them it's okay.

  • Truffle Tree. Grab your favorite homemade, or store-bought, no one will know either way and stack them up in the shape of a tree, using frosting or toothpicks to hold them together.
  • Berry Beautiful. If you want a healthier version of the previous suggestion, grab some strawberries (or any other of your favorite berries) instead.
  • Cheese and Wine Wonderment. If you just can’t figure out how to stack your treats into a 3D Christmas tree tower, recreate the effect as a 2D cheese and grape masterpiece to go perfectly with your wine instead.
  • Christmas Cookie Creations. If you give up on the first two but do not think the third suggestion is as cute, go with this little cookie concoction.
  • Cupcake Candy. If you are over the tree décor, here is a cupcake option that you will fall in love with. Bake up some red and white cupcakes and lay them out on your table in the shape of a candy cane.
  • Pretty Pinecones. If you really want to get creative, these muddy buddy pinecones are for you. They are delicious, decadent, and adorable.
  • Festive Fake Fruit. No, do not go out and buy some fake fruit. For this centerpiece you will just need some good wine, your favorite chocolate balls, and some hot glue.
  • Festive Real Fruit. Yes, this one will be using real fruit. Think of it as a DIY fruit bouquet, except you will be making a tree and it will be a million times better.
  • Scrumptious Wreath. If you want to go with something a little more on the fancy side, go with this cheese, olive, and tomato wreath as your centerpiece of choice.
  • Super Healthy Christmas Tree. Here is the ultimate healthy centerpiece: a veggie Christmas tree complete with peppers, broccoli, carrots, and tomatoes.
