DEAN'S FAMILY REUNION BAKED BEANS

Dean is the name that I was called as a kid growing up by the older generation of adults. Many of whom never realized that my actual name was Rose Mary. So when I added this recipe to my cookbook I named the recipe Dean's Family Reunion Baked Beans, so that they would know that this is the original recipe that I had been making...

Steps:

  • 1. PREHEAT OVEN TO 325 DEGREES F. Saute onions & bell peppers with lean ground beef until meat is browned in a large commercial- size pot. Drain any excess fat & liquid when meat mixture is cooked. Add meat mixture back into pot, & then add catsup, mustard, liquid smoke, molasses, Bar B Q sauce, brown sugar & DRAINED beans into pot, & simmer over low heat.
  • 2. With a large spoon stir to mix all the ingredients together. Continue to stir occassionally while cooking over low heat to prevent sticking. Let simmer uncovered, about 30 minutes .Then remove from heat.
  • 3. Precook all of the bacon partially in microwave. Then spray a large deep roasting pan or several 9 X 13 size pans with cooking spray, then pour beans into pans. Cover top of beans randomly with precooked bacon slices. Bake in preheated 325 degree F. oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until some of the liquid has baked off, and beans appear to have thickened.
  • 4. PLEASE NOTE: Oven temperatures vary so please check after 1 1/2 hours. Enjoy The Beefy Baked Beans recipe that I posted is somewhat similiar to this one but smaller in size, with a few slight variations.

4 1/2 -5 lb lean ground beef
2 large onions, (2 cups) chopped
1/3 c liquid smoke
32 oz heinz catsup (my preference)
2 c dark molasses
18 oz barbeque sauce( i like sweet baby rays)
1 c prepared yellow mustard
3 c dark brown sugar
4 large bell peppers ( i use red & green)
1 lb smoked bacon slices
14 lb pork & beans, drained

55 FAMILY REUNION RECIPES GUARANTEED TO IMPRESS

From southernliving.com
Author Mary Shannon Wells
Published May 25, 2019
  • Best Deviled Eggs. Is it even a family gathering without a plate of deviled eggs? Never. Our recipe adds a touch of sweetness with sweet pickle relish and makes enough to serve 12.
  • Mama's Fried Chicken. When Mama makes fried chicken, you better believe she does it well. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, the secret to this decadent recipe is the buttermilk.
  • Southern Cobb Salad With Cornbread Croutons. We added a Southern spin to Cobb salad with the addition of cornbread croutons and black-eyed peas. But we kept it classic with salty bacon, hard-boiled eggs, and a honey mustard dressing.
  • Texas Sheet Cake With Fudge Icing. Baked on a large sheet pan, this cake was truly made to serve a crowd. The defining elements are its shape and a rich batter that incorporates buttermilk and Dr. Pepper.
  • Reunion Pea Casserole. Impress even Grandma by showing up to the family meal with this cheesy, veggie-packed casserole. The "pea" refers to black-eyed peas, but you can also use purple hull, crowder peas, or other field peas with wonderful names like Whippoorwill, Lady Cream, and Pinkey.
  • Slow-Cooker Grape Jelly Meatballs. Even if the family reunion is planned for the middle of summer, there's always a batch of meatballs sitting in a slow cooker to stay warm.
  • Homemade Baked Beans. Backyard family reunions require a piping hot dish of baked beans with bacon. This recipe provides instructions for using either dried beans or canned.
  • Permanent Slaw. A heaping bowl of coleslaw belongs right alongside the baked beans at a Southern cookout. Made with finely shredded angel hair cabbage, carrot, bell pepper, sweet onions, and a sweet and sour apple cider vinegar dressing, this slaw becomes more flavorful the longer it sits (hence the name).
  • Pineapple Casserole. To those outside the South, "pineapple casserole" might sound bizarre, but to many, it's just as much a potluck staple as fried chicken.
  • Oven-Baked Baby Back Ribs. Serve up ribs without the need to use a grill or smoker by baking them in the oven. By wrapping the ribs in aluminum foil and cooking them at a low temperature, you ensure that you'll have moist and tender results.
