FROZEN BRANDY OLD-FASHIONEDS

Both sides of my family are Midwestern, so our strong brandy tradition is evident in the slush we make for the holidays and in the Wisconsin old-fashioned cocktails we enjoy year-round. I decided to combine those recipes into something completely new. This goes very quickly at gatherings! -Stephanie Vaughan, Madison, Wisconsin

Frozen Brandy Old-Fashioneds image

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil. Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved; cool completely. Stir in brandy, orange juice concentrate, juice and bitters. Pour into a 3-qt. freezer container. Freeze overnight or until set., For each serving, scoop 3/4 cup slush into a rocks glass. Pour lemon-lime soda into the glass; serve with fruit as desired.

Steps:

  • The night before, pour the cherry juice into ice cube molds and freeze.
  • To a blender, add the bourbon, Simple Syrup, bitters, cherry ice cubes and regular ice cubes and blend until smooth. Pour into rocks glasses or insulated tumblers and garnish with a thick orange peel.
  • Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepot and bring to a simmer. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved, then chill until ready to use.

2 cups tart cherry juice
8 ounces of your favorite bourbon
2 tablespoons Simple Syrup, recipe follows
8 dashes bitters
2 cups ice
4 thick slices orange peel, for serving
1 cup sugar in the raw
1 cup water

  • Fill a large cocktail shaker with ice or work in batches with a regular shaker. Add 4 ounces of the orange-cherry syrup with 8 dashes Bitter Truth Decanter or Angostura bitters and brandy. Shake well, then strain into ice-filled rocks glasses. Top each drink with 1 ounce chilled club soda and serve. Garnish with an orange wheel and a maraschino cherry.
