Steps:
- Place the potatoes in a large stockpot and cover with water. Generously season the water with salt. Add the bay leaves and place over high heat. Cover, bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender enough to smash with a fork, 25 to 35 minutes. Drain the potatoes and discard the bay leaves. Return the potatoes to the pot and add the heavy cream, sour cream and 4 tablespoons of the butter. Smash with a potato masher until smooth. Add the thyme, nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
- Place the sweet potato puree in a pot over medium-high heat. Cover and heat until warmed through, about 4 minutes.
- When ready to serve, mound a third of the white potatoes in the center of a serving bowl. Next, mound a third of the sweet potatoes on top of the white potatoes. Repeat this process, alternating between the vegetables, to make white and orange circles. Swirl together to create a marbled effect showing both colors.
- In a small pot, melt the remaining 3 tablespoons butter. Combine the butter and parsley. Pour over the potatoes and serve immediately.

GARLIC MASHED SWEET POTATOES
A tasty, and fairly healthy, recipe from Process This! from Jean Anderson. It makes use of the food processor to whip the sweet potatoes. It's so rich on it's own, you won't need extra butter or cream. The potatoes will bake for an hour total, and the garlic will be added to the pan halfway through.

Steps:
- Start by preheating your oven to 400°F.
- Scrub the sweet potatoes clean. Pat dry and prick each one several times with a fork. Place on an ungreased sheet pan. Bake for 30 minutes.
- While the potatoes are baking, slice the top of the garlic head off so that the cloves are exposed. Wrap in aluminum foil.
- After the potatoes have baked 30 minutes, add the foil wrapped garlic to the pan with the potatoes. Bake for an additional 30 minutes.
- Remove the pan from the oven. Split the potatoes lengthwise, and then flip them so the cut side is up. Unwrap the garlic, and let both the garlic and potatoes cool for about 15 minutes.
- Scoop out the sweet potato flesh into the food processor bowl with the chopping blade. (The skins of my potatoes just peeled off in one piece, so I didn't have to dirty up a spoon to scoop the flesh.) Squeeze out the roasted garlic cloves over the potatoes. Add in the remaining ingredients.
- Pulse for 10 seconds. Scrape the bowl and stir the potato mixture around. Repeat the pulse and stir step 2 more times, or until everything is smooth.
- Serve and enjoy immediately!

- Turkey. Without a whole roasted turkey, Thanksgiving dinners are incomplete. In the United States, most people prefer having turkeys with mashed potatoes.
- Fried Chicken. Apart from turkey, chicken dishes, especially fried chicken, go really well with mashed potatoes. Fried chickens tend to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
- Roasted Chicken. Are you craving some roasted chicken breasts? The chicken should be properly marinated and roasted till golden brown. A creamy side dish, such as mashed potatoes, will definitely complement your crispy yet tender chicken.
- Pork Chops. There’s no denying that grilled pork chops are delicious. However, the texture of the pork meat might seem a bit dry for you. Thus, you’ll want something creamy to go with it.
- Grilled Beef Steak. Beef is full of protein. Based on how you cook, grill, or fry them, they can be either dry or succulent. But, when it comes to choosing a beef dish that goes well with mashed potatoes, beef steaks will be your best bet.
- Pot Roast. One of the best comfort foods you’ll ever eat is pot roast. This rich gravy meal, which includes wine and tomato sauce, can be made with either beef or ham.
- Meatloaf. Another comfort food on this list is meatloaf. You can prepare meatloaf in many ways by adding ingredients of your choice. Given the dish is on the drier side, it is perfect for eating with creamy mashed potatoes.
