OLD FASHIONED BBQ SAUCE

This is certainly a simple old fashioned recipe from the label of "Grandmas Molasses." It's the unsulfured original recipe molasses. Use to baste or marinate chicken, ribs, chops, burgers.

1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup unsulphured molasses
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (Trappey's Red Devil)

Steps:

  • In a heavy bottomed medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and the garlic and cook, stirring often, until the onion is golden, about 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low. Simmer, stirring often, until slightly thickened, about 40 minutes. Cool completely. (To store, refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week)
  • Brush onto food during the last 10 minutes of grilling.

3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large onion , finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup ketchup
1 cup American-style chili sauce
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons steak sauce
2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, heat oil over medium. Add onion and cook until completely soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute.
  • Add tomato paste and mustard; cook, stirring constantly, until paste turns a brick-red color, about 5 minutes. Add 2 cups water, tomato sauce, molasses, Worcestershire, vinegar, salt, and pepper and stir until smooth.
  • Bring to a simmer; reduce heat to low and partially cover. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 2 hours (thin with water if sauce becomes too thick). Season to taste with vinegar, salt, and pepper. Let cool completely before using.
