Steps:

  • Whisk together ingredients for dressing in a non-reactive (non-metal) bowl until sugar dissolves.
  • Toss with slaw vegetables of choice.
  • Refrigerate at least four hours.
  • Toss well before serving.

1 cup mayonnaise (low fat works well too)
2 tablespoons sugar (I've also used Splenda here)
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 teaspoons black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon celery seed
5 cups shredded coleslaw mix (cabbage, carrot, onion, bell pepper, etc.)

CLASSIC CREAMY COLESLAW

This is our go-to recipe for creamy coleslaw. Freshly shredded green and red cabbage and carrots are tossed with a tangy, creamy dressing made up of mayonnaise, sour cream and cider vinegar. We also use dry mustard to add a subtle kick and celery salt and honey for a touch of sweetness. It's perfect for your next cookout!

PRESERVED-FOR-POSTERITY COLE SLAW DRESSING

I'm tired of digging out the recipe card or the cookbook that originally published the basic (now altered) recipe. Here it is, online, so I won't lose it again. I like coleslaw. GOOD coleslaw. This dressing works for me.

Steps:

  • Try to follow along here: Whisk together all the ingredients. There. Done. I know, I know -- it's complicated.
  • If you like Jane's Krazy Salt or another blended seasoning, feel free to add a hefty sprinkle of it to the dressing. And by the way, if you despise even the suggestion of horseradish, and you're out of buttermilk, you can stick with the first 4 ingredients and you'll still have a very respectable coleslaw dressing that people like.
  • Pour it over about 2 lbs of shredded cabbage and carrot. 2 lbs is a LOT of coleslaw for a small family or a couple. I halve the recipe and pour it over 1 bag of preshredded coleslaw mix -- and it's STILL a lot of coleslaw. You're supposed to let it sit and soak for anywhere from 2 hours to overnight and yes, you can do that, but I will confess to scooping out my first serving as soon as I've mixed the stuff together. Caution: the template is demanding that I specify servings and I'm just guessing by saying 16. Pour it over about 2 lbs of shredded cabbage and carrot and see how many people get to try your coleslaw.
  • Then you can write a review and complain about my inaccurate servings estimate. ;-).

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup Miracle Whip
1/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon prepared horseradish

COLESLAW DRESSING

With some of this prepared and waiting in your fridge, and a package of the shredded cabbage coleslaw mix you can buy, you can have a salad on the table in minutes! Recipe easily doubles, or you can also easily just make half. I originally got this recipe from a friend, but I cut back the sugar and changed the type of vinegar used.

Steps:

  • Note that you can adjust the sugar and vinegar amounts to suit your taste, adding more or less of each as you prefer; also note that if you insist on using Miracle Whip, you'll likely want to cut the sugar back.
  • In a blender, food processor, or even in a bowl with a whisk, combine all ingredients well; taste, add more salt if you wish.
  • Either use right away to dress a coleslaw, or store, covered, in the refrigerator; keeps well for several days.

  • Remove seeds from remaining lemon half and add to the bowl of a food processor along with olive oil, cumin, coriander, and pepper; process until pureed. If dressing seems too thick, add water to reach desired consistency. Stir in preserved rind.

7 to 8 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
