EASY APPLE DUMPLINGS
My mother often prepared this special treat for us, ready to take out of the oven just as we came home from school. I can remember their magnificent aroma as I opened the front door so vividly. -Marjorie Thompson, West Sacramento, California

HUMMINGBIRD FOOD
This is such an easy recipe. I don't add any food color to this as I've heard it's not good for the little birds. Do not use honey or other types of sugar, the birds cannot digest them. Also if you have trouble with ants you can now get a little item that has ant repellent in it that doesn't harm the birds. I have one on my hummer feeder.

Steps:
- Bring the water to a boil.
- Take the water off the heat and add the sugar.
- Stir to dissolve completely.
- Let the nectar cool.
- Place in a clean hummingbird feeder and hang outside for the birds.
- Note:.
- Change the food at least every three to five days with a new batch to keep it fresh. Remember don't use food coloring.
- Check the bird feeder regularly and every time you change the food to see if any gray mold has formed inside the feeder base, or, any ants have crawled inside to get at the sugar water.
- If you see any take the feeder down and throw the bird food away. It's not good for the birds to drink this. Chances are they won't drink it anyway.
- Clean the hummingbird feeder by rinsing with warm water. Then, put a few drops of bleach into the water inside the feeder and clean with a bottle brush.
- Once clean, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and let dry.
- Fill up with new food and place outside.
- The birds will love you for it!

Steps:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Spray a 9×13 pan with non-stick spray.
- Slice the cored and peeled apples into eight wedges.
- Open one of the cans of crescent rolls and carefully unroll it. Separate the 8 triangles from each other.
- Place one apple slice on the wide end of the triangle, then roll up like a crescent roll (the package has an illustration on the back if you're not sure what that should look like). Tuck the ends around the apple slice to completely enclose it. Place in the baking pan and repeat with the seven remaining triangles from the first can, then repeat again with the second can of crescent rolls.
- Place the butter in a large microwave safe measuring cup and microwave until melted, about a minute.
- Stir in the sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon, then spread evenly over the dumplings in the pan.
- Pour the Mountain Dew around the edges of the pan.
- Bake at 350F for 35-40 minutes, or until the crescent rolls are golden brown on top.
QUEBEC APPLE DUMPLINGS
To quote Mme. Benoit,"In Quebec these were baked in deep brown earthenware pudding dishes and served on a hot wooden board or tray surrounded by autumn leaves or boughs cut from the Christmas tree. It was a traditional in our family to serve these dumplings after we had finished decorating the Christmas tree." Posted for Zaar World Tour II.

CHEF JOHN'S APPLE DUMPLINGS
This is one of America's oldest desserts. The flavor profile is almost identical to an apple pie, but instead of having a bunch of slices about, we have one beautifully roasted, tender, sweet apple inside--which while still covered in the same crust we use for a pie, is far superior because we basted and baked it with a sugar sauce. I highly recommend these get served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter a baking dish.
- Combine brown sugar, 3 tablespoons butter, and water in a small pot over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, and boil until all sugar is dissolved. Turn off heat and swirl pot gently to combine. Reserve sauce until needed.
- Stir sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Core the unpeeled apples.
- Divide pie dough into 4 portions. Roll out on a lightly floured surface into 4 circles about 1/8-inch thick and 7 inches in diameter, or large enough to fully wrap an apple.
- Place apples in the center of each round of dough. Spoon about 3 teaspoons of cinnamon sugar into the apple cores; fill each hole with a teaspoon of butter.
- Wrap each apple up in pie dough, sealing the dough together at the top. Be careful not to pull and stretch it too tightly around the apple as you wrap, or it might break apart when it bakes; brush lightly with water if dough won't stick together. Even out the top and trim off any excess; shape into decorative leaves if desired.
- Place wrapped apples seam-side up into the buttered baking dish. Ladle some sauce over each to cover completely.
- Bake in the preheated oven, basting with sauce occasionally, until pastry is browned and cooked through and apples are tender, 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from the oven and baste with more sauce. Serve warm.
