  • Combine flour, salt and baking powder. In a 1-qt. glass container, layer flour mixture, cocoa, sugar, brown sugar, chocolate chips and M&M's, packing well between each layer. Cover and store in a cool, dry place up to 6 months. Yield: 1 batch (about 4 cups total). , To prepare brownies: Preheat oven to 350°. Beat eggs, oil and vanilla. Stir in brownie mix. Pour into a greased 8-in. square baking dish. Bake until center is set, 26-28 minutes (do not overbake). Cool on a wire rack.

  • Mix the 5/8 cup of flour with salt. In a clean, wide mouth 1 quart or 1 liter jar, layer the ingredients in the order given. Starting with the flour and salt mixture, and ending with the walnuts.
  • Attach a decorative tag to the out side of the jar with the following directions: Sand Art Brownies: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease one 9x9 inch square baking pan. 2. Pour the contents of the jar into a large bowl, and mix well. 3. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2/3 cup vegetable oil, and 3 eggs. Beat until just combined. 4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, and bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

  • Layer in each Layered ingreidnet in each of 12 quart jars in the order given, leveling the ingredients as you layer: Make sure the jar is full to the top.
  • Cover the lid with a 7 1/2-inch circle of fabric tied with ribbon or raffia.
  • Finish with a tag that includes liquid ingredients and baking instructions as follows: To Prepare Brownies---------.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the contents of the quart jar with 3 well-beaten eggs, 2/3 cup vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  • Pour Batter into a well-greased 9x13-inch cake pan and bake in a pre-heated 350°F oven for 30 to 35 minutes.

Steps:

  • To color the sugar: Divide the sugar into 4 (1/2-cup) portions. Put 1/2 cup sugar into the jar and add 1 to 3 drops of food coloring. Put the lid on and shake the jar well until the sugar is completely colored. Empty the sugar into a small bowl and continue with the remaining sugar using different food colorings to make different colors.
  • To make the Sand Art: Whisk together the flour and salt and set aside. Layer the dry ingredients into the jar, alternating colors (the sugar) and dark (cocoa powder) and light (flour), making your own design. Don't forget the chips! Screw on the lid and print out this recipe to enclose with your gift jar.
  • To bake: Heat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 13 by 9-inch pan with butter.
  • Dump the contents of the jar into a large bowl. Mix together the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla. Stir the wet and dry ingredients together until well combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
