THE BEST SANGRIA

The longer sangria sits before drinking, the more smooth and mellow it will taste. A full day is best, but if that's impossible, give it an absolute minimum of two hours to sit. Use large, heavy, juicy oranges and lemons for the best flavor. Doubling or tripling the recipe is fine, but you'll have to switch to a large punch bowl in place of the pitcher. Steps:

  • • Bring sugar and water to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved, then boil over moderately high heat 5 minutes. Cool syrup to room temperature and pour over fruit in a small bowl. Chill, covered, 4 hours.
  • • Drain fruit in a large sieve set over another bowl and reserve fruit and syrup separately.
  • • Fill a large glass pitcher one-fourth full with ice and add wine, fruit, and 1 cup syrup (save leftover syrup for another use). Stir wine, gently mashing fruit with a wooden spoon, then add sparkling water to taste, starting with 1 cup.
  • • Serve sangría in wineglasses with 1 or 2 slices of fruit in each glass.

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup water

1 lemon, thinly sliced
1 lime, thinly sliced
4 cups dry red wine
About 1 1/2 cups chilled sparkling water

THE WORLD'S BEST SANGRIA

I found this on the internet a long time ago and it's a hit at parties. I've never added the brandy though, but I've left it in the recipe. *Note: Time to make includes the 18 hour chill time!*

Steps:

  • Mix wine, sugar and fruit in a glass bowl or pitcher. Let sit in the fridge for 18-24 hours. The mixture will have a somewhat syrupy consistency.
  • Before serving, stir in the brandy and cut the mixture with soda water until it has a thinner, more wine-like consistency.
  • Serve in wine glasses.
  • (You could use orange or lemon flavored soda instead of soda water.).
