'SO THIS IS WHAT HEAVEN TASTES LIKE!' CREAM CHEESE BARS

This recipe was my absolute favorite sweet treat growing up, and still is! This was my great-grandma's recipe and is NOT for those watching their figure! The result is a very rich, very tasty bar cookie. The nuts and cherries are both optional, but give great variations to this recipe.

'So This Is What Heaven Tastes Like!' Cream Cheese Bars image

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • Beat the margarine, cream cheese, and sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the margarine mixture before adding the next. Beat in the vanilla with the last egg. Mix in the flour, salt, chocolate chips, and walnuts until just incorporated. Fold in the maraschino cherries; mixing just enough to evenly combine. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out nearly clean, about 25 minutes. Watch closely - the finished bars will be very pale in color. Remove from oven immediately if the sides begin to pull away from the pan. Cool pan on a wire rack before cutting into bars.

This is one of my children's favorites. They eat them up when I make them as they are very addictive. You just can't eat one. I cut them in small pieces also as I like to give them as gifts around Christmas time. My friends must love them also because I get requests all the time to make these delicious little treats. Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Spray 13X9 inch pan with Pam.
  • Mix cake mix, 1 egg and 1 stick melted margarine.
  • Press into bottom and spread a little up sides of pan.
  • Topping.
  • Beat remaining ingredients until smooth and creamy, about two to three minutes.
  • Spread over cake mixture evenly.
  • Bake until light brown, 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Cool completely before cutting with a sharp knife.

Steps:

  • Crush the biscuits in a food processor until they resemble fine crumbs. Add the melted butter and blend until combined. Press into a lightly greased and lined 22 cm springform pan.
  • Dissolve jelly crystals in boiling water. Soften the cream cheese with an electric beater then gradually add the jelly, beat until smooth.
  • Fold through thickened cream and Cherry Ripe pieces. Pour onto crust, cover with cling wrap and chill until set, 2 hours should do but it tastes better if it's left over night.

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, 1/4 cup egg substitute and oil; mix until blended. Reserve 1/2 cup mixture for topping.
