Steps:

  • Pour whipping cream into stand mixer bowl and start on medium speed. You can also use a traditional bowl and hand mixer.
  • Add the powdered sugar one tablespoon at a time followed by the sugar, and salt.
  • Once the ingredients are mixed in, increase the speed and whip to a slightly firm consistency. You don't want super stiff cream since this isn't for frosting.
  • Add the butterscotch caramel topping and continue beating to desired consistency. I try to go for something a little stiffer than Cool Whip but looser than frosting.
  • Spoon 1-2 teaspoons into a cold mug or glass. Pour the chilled cream soda into the glass stirring somewhat slowly with a spoon. You don't want make the two things one but stirring it will build a better head. Once the head starts to form pretty good, you can stop stirring.
  • Serve cold and enjoy.
  • Notes: You can put the unused cream into a plastic container and it will keep in the fridge for a few days. I have tested several brands of cream soda (IBC, Sprechers, Frostop) but the one that tastes the closest to what you will get at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is definitely Boylan's Cream Soda. I use Mrs. Richardson's Butterscotch Caramel Topping and pink sea salt. I do know that the WWHP uses a non-dairy topping and I'm on the hunt for Rich's Whip Topping but no luck yet!

10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BUTTERBEER AT THE …

Estimated Reading Time 7 mins
  • Compliments to the Chef. The genius behind Universal’s Butterbeer recipe is none other than Chef Steven Jayson. Chef Jayson is Universal’s corporate executive chef and also doubles as Vice President of the Orlando resort.
  • Fantastic Butterbeer & Where To Find It. Now that you’ve got the basics, here is where to find every version of Butterbeer. Cold and frozen Butterbeer can be found at the red Butterbeer carts, which may or may not have a shorter line than the indoor locations.
  • Butterbeer Merch. Yeah, there’s actually merchandise for a fictional drink. We really shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s kind of impressive that people buy it.
  • Too Sweet? You like butterscotch but don’t like an overwhelmingly sweet taste? Or do you crave that teeth-rotting goodness? Fear not, there’s literally a Butterbeer for everyone.
  • What Does It Taste Like? Honestly? It depends on what kind of Butterbeer you get. The base of all Butterbeers is butterscotch, so you always have that sweetness to count on.
  • A Butterbeer Float! Sorry for all the Disney Parks fans, but it’s not a parade float. Seriously, what do we have to do to get a Harry Potter parade? (Though rumor has it that the land may be operating during Halloween Horror Nights.
  • It’s Solid & Frozen. But wait, there’s more! The frozen Butterbeer option can also be found at the carts, so remember to specify which one you want. There’s a difference.
  • It’s Hot & It’s Cold. Yes, there is a hot version that will warm you up from the inside out! And no, it’s not a seasonal item anymore... for Hollywood. Sorry, Orlando.
  • Putting the Beer in the Butter. That being said, there’s a great way around this. You’ll never hear or see it advertised by anyone in the park due to both brand integrity and legal reasons, but you can DIY your own adult version of Butterbeer.
  • No Beer in the Butter. To clarify: Butterbeer does not contain alcohol. As irresponsible as the canon wizarding world seems to generally be, they don’t actually give alcohol to school children.

RANKING THE MAGICAL FOOD & BUTTERBEER AT THE WIZARDING …

From bonappetit.com
  • Frozen Butterbeer. When it's roughly a billion degrees outside, no magic spell is going to save you. Instead, grab a frosty glass of frozen butterbeer (non-alcoholic, of course) and wonder why nobody else in the world thought to make a cream soda-flavored slushie with butterscotch foam.
  • Shepherd's Pie. Harry Potter barely poked at Shepherd's Pie while sitting in detention with Prof. Lockhart back in The Chamber of Secrets, but this version is oddly satisfying (especially in the not-so-lauded genre of theme park food).
  • Pumpkin Fizz. When Gryffindor bests Ravenclaw in The Prisoner of Azkaban, the Weasley twins bring some pumpkin fizz candies from Honeyduke's to celebrate.
  • Fizzing Whizzbees. You may recognize “Fizzing Whizzbee” as the password to Dumbledore's office, but the muggle version is a box full of “chocolate fizzy fruits” according to the package—AKA bee-shaped chocolates with Pop Rocks.
  • Butterbeer. Take all the joy of frozen butterbeer and de-slushify it. The result is a very sweet cream soda with a head of butterscotch marshmallow cream.
  • The Great Feast Platter. When the students of Hogwarts start a new term, they indulge in the Great Feast, a legendary smorgasbord of everything a young British street urchin could dream of.
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding. All of the sweets in Three Broomsticks skew towards the ultra-sugary side of things, but the Sticky Toffee Pudding takes the proverbial pudding cake.
  • Chocolate Frog. Let's get one thing straight: Nobody really cares about the actual chocolate frog. You buy a chocolate frog for the pentagram-shaped collectible card inside.
  • Pumpkin Juice. Pumpkin juice is basically the go-to beverage for wizards in the Harry Potter books and if you're the type of person that prefers “orange drink” to orange juice, then you'll love the PJ.
  • Exploding Bon Bons. small>Photo: Ron Mateo / Universal Studios Hollywood. "Exploding” is a bit of wishful thinking here, but “Crackling Bon Bons” probably didn't do well with the focus groups.
