So much fun for Halloween. The kids love them, and it actually is a tasty way to enjoy a hotdog because the strips brown on all sides. Toasting buns is optional, but we like them that way.

Steps:

  • Slice hotdogs in half lengthwise, then each half into thirds lengthwise to make 6 strips from each hotdog. Make a few shallow cuts along the length of each strip on the "skin" side. This will help them curl into worms as they cook.
  • Open hotdog buns and thinly spread butter on the cut sides of buns.
  • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Toast buns, cut side down in skillet til browned and toasty. You may need to do this in batches. Remove buns from skillet and keep warm.
  • Place hotdog strips in same hot skillet. Toss and cook til curly, hot, and browned to your family's liking. Serve strips on toasted buns and top with desired condiments.

  • Place the chocolate sandwich cookies into a resealable plastic zipper bag, and crush with a rolling pin into crumbs. For a more mudlike appearance, untwist the cookies and scrape off the creme filling before crushing cookies.
  • Whisk together the chocolate pudding mix with the milk in a bowl, stirring for 2 minutes. Sprinkle about 1/3 of the crushed sandwich cookie crumbs into the bottom of a serving bowl, and spoon the chocolate pudding over the crumbs. Smooth out the top of the pudding, then top with the rest of the chocolate cookie crumbs to resemble dirt. Poke gummy worms halfway into the dirt. Refrigerate until serving.

WORMS ON A BUN WITH ZOMBIE SAUCE

From what I understand, Heinz carries a line of colored ketchups, one being called Funky Purple and one called Blastin' Green, which are a big hit with kids. Well, this is a fun Halloweeny recipe to get the kids involved...edible wormy hot dogs on a bun topped with purple ketchup. As the recipe specifies, if you can't find the Funky Purple ketchup, make your own with a few drops of blue food coloring.
