Steps:

  • Put all of the ingredients into a spice grinder and pulse until a powder is formed, about 30 to 45 seconds. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 months.

3 teaspoons dried thyme
1 teaspoon powdered sumac
1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

ZAAR

Not to mix up with lime juice - lime cordial is very much sweeter. Is found in any food store. (Except maybe in Fort Dodge Iowa. :-( rats)

1 ounce absolut peach vodka
1 ounce lemon juice
1 ounce carbonated lemon-lime beverage
1 ounce lime cordial

I combined three different recipes and came up with what I like to call the "ZAAR" Dog. :).The recipes I used were, half of Recipe#65340 shaped into hotdog buns,Recipe#41733,and Recipe#271092.I want to thank the posters of the previous recipes,jean,busy mom, and BecR.Cook time is an estimate, since you choose the way you cook your dogs.Now you could use regular buns,chili dog sauce,and cheese sauce,but then it wouldn't be a "ZAAR" dog would it ? ;)

Steps:

  • Place a hot dog into each bun.
  • Top each with 1/8 cup of chili sauce.
  • If desired top each dog with 2 Tablespoons chopped onion.
  • Then top each dog with 1/8 cup of cheese sauce.
  • And now you have The "Original "ZAAR" Dog :).

HEALTHIER ZAAR CARROT CAKE

This is based on the divine "Why I Joined Zaar" carrot cake by Lennie, but with many modifications to make it a bit healthier for my family. We use this as a breakfast muffin, but I also get raves when I frost them and serve them as dessert.

Healthier Zaar Carrot Cake image

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F; grease and flour a 9x13 pan, bundt pan, or about 17 cupcakes.
  • 2. Mix powders (except sugar) in a large bowl; make a well in the center.
  • 3. In separate bowl, mix eggs, liquids, and sugar; pour into the well of the powder bowl and mix with a large spoon until smooth.
  • 4. Stir in carrots, coconut, walnuts, and pineapple. Pour into pan or in 1/2 cup increments for cupcakes- batter does not rise all that much.
  • 5. Bake (about 45 minutes for a 9x13 pan, or about 17 minutes for cupcakes). Test for doneness with a toothpick or knife before removing from oven.
  • 6. Optional cream cheese frosting: 8 oz cream cheese, 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. (Wow. The frosting keeps a long time in the fridge as well.)
  • Enjoy! I freeze these individually wrapped in saran wrap (unfrosted) and stored in freezer bags-- mostly to keep us from eating them nonstop when they're fresh. Yes, they really are that good.

This za'atar spice recipe is easy to make at home from scratch with just four ingredients. While in Lebanon wild thyme is used, regular thyme from the supermarket or your garden makes a fine substitute. Za'atar refers both to the thyme plant itself, as well as this spice mix.

Steps:

  • Lightly toast the cumin seeds in a dry pan, just until they start to release their aroma. Grind them to a fine powder using a pestle and mortar then stir in all the other ingredients plus 2 tsp salt and 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper. It is now ready to use in your recipes, but will keep in a clean jar or airtight container for a month.

  • Combine all in food processor.
  • Process this, adding only enough extra virgin olive oil to make a thick paste.
  • Spread on a guaze pad, and place it on your upper arm.
  • Secure with first aid tape.
  • Refrigerate unused portion until needed.
  • Make a new patch twice a day.
  • Place the new patch in a different location to avoid localized irritation.
  • Return to Zaar as soon as possible.
