MINT JULEP - THE REAL THING

Don't be fooled by imposters. This is the authentic julep. Makes you want to wear a white suit & black string tie whilst you sip it from your silver cup. I make this every year for a Derby party & some of the guests like them so much they never remember which horse won the race. Cook time includes chilling time.

KENTUCKY DERBY MINT JULEPS

This is a real julep, the now classic julep first served to Derby guests in 1875 by Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the founder of Churchill Downs. Now, as then, it is made with just four ingredients: finely crushed ice, a little sugar water, fresh spearmint and fine, aged, 90-proof straight Kentucky bourbon.

Provided by Suzanne Hamlin

Time 12h5m

Yield Up to 20 juleps

Number Of Ingredients 7

Steps:

  • The day before serving, or even earlier, put the julep cups in the freezer. Put the water and sugar in a small saucepan, bring to a boil without stirring, and boil for 2 minutes, or until sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Put the mint leaves in a glass jar or cup, pour the slightly cooled syrup over them, let cool, then cover and refrigerate for 12 hours or longer. When ready to use, strain out the mint leaves.
  • Half an hour before serving, pack the julep cups tightly up to the rim with crushed ice and return them to the freezer.
  • For each julep pour 3 ounces of bourbon over the ice, followed by two teaspoons of mint syrup. Do not stir or agitate. Use a cloth to hold each cup by the rim so as not to disturb the frost. Use a short straw or a chopstick to make a hole in the ice on the side of the cup and insert a sprig of mint. Serve immediately, preferably on a silver tray.

1 cup spring or bottled water
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup small spearmint leaves, no stems
Finely crushed or shaved ice, enough to fill the cups completely
High-quality Kentucky bourbon like Maker's Mark or Woodford Reserve
Sprigs of spearmint
Metal julep cups, about 9 ounces, preferably silver

Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
  • The Classic Mint Julep. The classic recipe for a mint julep is straightforward, and it has a refreshing taste you won't find in any other cocktail. Quite simply, it's a shot of your favorite bourbon poured over muddled mint and sugar, then topped with crushed ice.
  • Whiskey Smash. As classic as the mint julep, the whiskey smash is nearly the same drink. It dates back to at least the 1880s and is one of the most refreshing smash drinks you can mix up.
  • Brandy Smash. Though whiskey is essential to a mint julep, it's not the spirit of choice for everyone. If brandy is more your style, break with Derby Day tradition and mix up a brandy smash.
  • White Peach Julep. It's time to get peachy! The white peach julep recipe is a fun and simple twist on the original. Though white peaches are not always available, any peach will do for this drink.
  • The Ginger Julep ’68 Fastback. When you have a big, bold bourbon, you don't have to worry about it getting lost in any julep. The whiskey becomes even more daring when you add the snappy spice of fresh ginger to it.
  • Whiskey Cider Julep. The mint julep should not be reserved for that one Saturday in May because it's fantastic at any time of year. And yet, a recipe like the whiskey cider julep is a better fit for autumn.
  • Eye Candy. Inspired by the gin smash, the eye candy will surely tantalize your taste buds. This modern creation is filled with fresh flavors and is perfect for the spring season.
  • Pot of Gold. There's also a muddled mint cocktail for vodka lovers. While the pot of gold is served martini-style, it can do just as well on the rocks.
  • Combier Royal Smash. The Combier royal smash is another non-whiskey alternative, and it's probably the easiest of the lot. It features the delightfully sweet flavor of Royal Combier, an orange liqueur that can quickly become a new staple in your bar.
  • Peach Julep Ice Pop. A fun treat that every adult at your Derby party will enjoy, these peach julep ice pops are fun to make. The recipe combines fresh mint with peach juice and the bourbon of your choice.
