BEST EVER SLOPPY JOES

This recipe was given to me by a friend who is a celebrated chef - oddly enough - it was not something he concocted - it was his sisters recipe. Simply put it is the best sloppy joe I have ever had.

Steps:

  • In large pan, I use a large electric skillet, brown the ground beef and sausage. Drain off the fat.
  • Add remaining ingredients to the pan except for the flour and mix well.
  • Cook on low heat, stirring occasionally breaking up any large chunks of meat.
  • Once mixture has cooked through (approximately 60 mins) and is slightly thickend sift flour over the top and mix in well to further thicken.
  • Note: This can also be made in a crockpot, simply put the browned meats in the crock pot - add the remaining ingredients except for flour, cook on low 6-8 hours and then turn to high and stir in the flour to thicken.

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink.
  • drain.
  • stir in the tomato sauce; ketchup, Parmesan cheese, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder and oregano.
  • bring to a boil.
  • reduce heat.
  • simmer, uncovered for 20 minutes.
  • in a bowl (or glass measuring cup) combine butter, paprika and remaining garlic powder.
  • mix well.
  • brush over cut sides of rolls.
  • place bottom half of kaiser roll on each piece of heavy-duty foil.
  • spread meat mixture on roll bottoms.
  • top with mozzarella cheese.
  • replace roll tops.
  • wrap each sandwich in heavy-duty foil
  • place on baking sheet.
  • Bake for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Plus, this is a quick 'n easy one dish meal (don't mind the long list of ingredients, it really goes together quickly, I promise). The veggies get "sneaked in" & they contribute mellow depth of flavor, while providing valuable health benefits to your family (and nobody will be the wiser!). :) Serve hot on a warmed hamburger bun (we like soft potato buns) with or without shredded cheese, and a pickle spear on the side is good. YUM! I like to make a double batch, one for now and one for later because leftovers are super fabulous the next day (and it freezes beautifully, as well). Hope you enjoy as much as we do!! :)

  • Preheat a large Dutch oven or saucepan over low heat. Now add the fat to the pan and when melted add the ground beef, celery, onion, carrots, and potato. Cook and stir over medium to medium-high heat until beef is no longer pink; now add the bell peppers and cook until the peppers are softened.
