BLOODY MARY BREAD
From Cooking Light's 1991 Annual Cookbook. I'm not sure how accurately this bread mimics the cocktail, but give it a try! This is a yeast bread and therfore needs time to rise. The rising time has not been factored into the prep or cook time.

Steps:
- Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl; let stand 5 minutes to "bloom.

LU'S BLOODY MARY
My friend Lu Ratunil was the man behind the bar on Sundays at Good World, my favorite brunch spot when I was still the sort of person who went out to brunch. He considers himself a bit of a purist when it comes to bloody marys, explaining that ''since the drink has so many ingredients, the key is to balance them.''

Steps:
- Squeeze lemon and lime wedges into a shaker. Add all other ingredients except vodka, and stir. Taste the mix, and adjust the seasoning if needed. Put the mix in the fridge, and let it sit overnight.
- Pour vodka into the shaker. Add ice cubes, and shake.
- Fill an 8-ounce glass about halfway with ice, and strain the shaker contents over it.
- For garnish, I prefer a slice of seedless cucumber, also known as a hothouse or English cucumber, rather than celery. (This isn't a deal breaker, though.) Cut a 1/2-inch-thick slice of cucumber on the bias. Cut a slit in the slice, and place on the rim of the glass. Spear the pitted green olive with a toothpick, and stick it through the rind of the lemon wedge. Place the wedge on the rim of the glass. Crack a little freshly ground pepper on top.

BLOODY MARY MIX
We've made hundreds of thousands of bloody Marys over the decades at Prune, with 11 variations, and this classic base mix has been the stalwart, gleaming engine of them all. The lemon juice is what makes it so bright and zingy, and the Sacramento brand tomato juice is clean, with perfect body, never muddy or thick. Prepared horseradish keeps its bite and moisture just about forever, whereas fresh grated horseradish loses its potency almost immediately, leaving dead bits of pencil shavings in the glass instead - so resist the urge to "improve" the recipe. Worcestershire sauce adds greater depth to the umami already inherent in tomato, and the Tabasco brand hot-pepper sauce brings vibrancy with its high acidity but very manageable heat. This bloody Mary is as refreshing as a virgin affair as it is when spiked and garnished.

Steps:
- Whisk together all the bloody Mary mix ingredients, transfer to a bottle and shake well just before using.
- Fill tall glasses with ice; pour the bloody Mary mix on top.
- If using the vodka, mix 1/4 cup vodka with 1/2 cup bloody Mary mix in a shaker over ice; shake for 10 hard strokes, strain and pour into each ice-filled glass.
- Garnish with a leafy interior rib of celery, a wooden skewer of olives and a lemon wedge.
BLOODY MARY BREAD (BREAD MACHINE / ABM)
Another fun bread from my Bread Maker's Bible-- V-8 Classic will do just fine if you don't have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's nearby and can cheaply obtain tomato juice. Omit the wheat gluten if using bread flour. Prep time accounts for the dough cycle, mine is 90 minutes.

Steps:
- Add the ingredients to your bread machine according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Do a Light or Medium cycle if you want to bake it in the machine. Oven, do a dough cycle then lay a piece of parchment paper onto a cookie sheet and mold the dough into a big loaf and bake at 375F for 25-30 minutes.
- I heartily recommend this bread to be eaten with celery stalks, a good pepper jelly, and of course, Bloody Marys with plenty of Absolut Peppar! (Or Blue Flames or Dragon's Breath if you're really masochistic.).
