CROATIAN BAKED BEANS CASSEROLE ("ZAPECENI GRAH")
This meal has Turkish origin. All Balkan States has similar meals, this is one we prepare in Croatia. There are lot of variations of this meal, some put sausages, some bacon, some nothing but beans. It is better if you use clay pot for this meal. This is how I do it.

Steps:
- Soak beans day before cooking.
- In the morning, cook beans until soft, do not overcook it.
- Slice leek into thin slices across and sauté it on lard until softens. Add flour and some water to make creamy liquid. Add paprika (hot and sweet), stir and add beans. Add water and stir. Cook just until boils. Remove from fire.
- Slice tomato into round slices. Slice Pepper into round slices. Slice pancetta thin.
- Take clay pot and put some this pancetta slices on the bottom. Pour all beans over. On the top arrange tomato slices, pepper slices and over all pancetta slices. Usually, ingredients on the top depends on season: if there is no tomatoes, than no tomatoes. Bake in hot oven on 180°C about 30 minutes, or when you see crusty top.

BAKED BEANS CASSEROLE
This is from a 1978 cookbook Come and Get It - A Natural Foods Cookbook For Children. It has some good recipes in it.

Steps:
- Cook beans in water in a covered pan until soft, about 2 hours on medium.
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Drain water and save about 1 cup of water.
- Add remaining ingredients plus the reserved bean liquid.
- Simmer, covered, for about 3 hours in the oven at 350°F.
- For Biscuit Topping: Mix the ingredients together and drop by spoonfuls on top of casserole, 20 minutes before serving time.
- Turn up the oven to 425°F and bake for 20 minutes or until biscuits are golden brown.

SOUTH CROATIAN SAUTéED FRENCH BEANS
This is usual way of making French Beans along coastal area in Croatia. It is very easy to make and quite tasty to eat. Serve with various meats and potatoes as side dish.

Steps:
- Clean the French beans and cut into two or three parts (3-5 cm).
- Sauté finely minced onion on butter until translucent.
- In the meantime put French beans into hot water and cook 5-8 minutes, than remove from water and drain.
- Add French beans into sautéed onion; add tomato juice, very finely minced garlic and parsley. Season it with salt and pepper. Stir and add some beef stock to cover French beans.
- Cook until French beans are soft, or 20-30 minutes adding beef stock if necessary.

HUNKY BAKED BEANS CASSEROLE
My aunt's recipe. My whole family LOVES this stuff. It is also great to take to parties in a slow cooker. Trust me, its a crowd-pleaser!! My cousin eats the leftovers for breakfast!!lol

Steps:
- Fry bacon in skillet and drain.
- Brown ground beef in skillet, season with salt and pepper and drain.
- Combine bacon and hamburger with remaining ingredients in casserole dish.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
NORTH CROATIAN SIMPLE BEANS SALAD
It is very simple recipe. You may keep the salad up to 3 days in hermetically closed pot in refrigerator (The second day is the best). You can use almost all kinds of beans, even Italian brown lentils. I did not include soaking time in this recipe. We use pumpkin oil for this recipe, but since it has strong and peculiar taste it may be strange for non-Croatians. You may use normal oil, but not olive oil.

Steps:
- Cook beans until soft. Drain and put into salad bowl.
- Slice onion into very thin rings and add into beans. Season with salt and pepper. Mix water and vinegar and add into salad. Pour oil over and stir.
- Leave it in refrigerator at least one hour. You can keep surpluses in hermetically closed pot in refrigerator.
