BUTTER-CRUNCH TOPPING
"It's nice to keep this crisp, golden mixture on hand to top pudding or pie filling over ice cream," reports field editor Ellen Benninger of Greenville, Pennsylvania. "I got this handy dessert idea from a neighbor."

BUTTER CRUNCH TOPPING
A tasty make-ahead topping for coffee cakes, muffins, quick breads or mix it with ice cream and serve with butterscotch sauce. Sprinkle one cup over apple or other fruit crisp filling before baking. My favorite version is with pecans or a combination of nuts and coconut. Originally from a 1971 Betty Crocker recipe card.

- Make the caramel crunch: Line a rimmed baking sheet with a nonstick baking mat; set aside. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 1/2 tablespoons water; mixture should look like wet sand. Place saucepan over medium-high heat and cook until sugar is dark amber in color. Immediately pour caramel onto prepared baking sheet; let cool completely.
- Crack cooled caramel into large pieces and place in a resealable plastic bag. Crush into tiny pieces using a rolling pin; you should have a scant 1/2 cup of caramel crunch.

Steps:
- Place rack in lowest position in oven. Heat oven to 450 degrees F ( 230 degrees C).
- To Make Topping: Mix 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon; cut in butter or margarine until mixture is moist and crumbly, and clumps together easily.
- To Make Filling: Peel, core, and slice apples into approximately 1/8 inch slices. If you cut them too thick you'll have crunchy apples. In another bowl, toss cut up apples, white sugar, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle in flour, and stir until apples are evenly coated.
- Layer apple slices in pie shell. You will have a lot of apples, but they will shrink. Layer them higher in the middle. Pour left over juice from apple mixture over apples. Pat the brown sugar topping evenly over apples to make a top crust.
- Place pie on cookie sheet in oven to catch juice droppings. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and bake for 45 minutes to one hour; bake until center of pie has no resistance. If top starts to get too dark, cover with piece of foil. Cool on wire rack before serving.

WAYS TO ADD CRUNCH TO A CASSEROLE - ALLRECIPES
From allrecipes.com
- Cereal. Casseroles and cereal may seem like an odd combination, but this has been a classic pairing since boxes of cereal hit the grocery store shelves.
- Anything Fried. Adding a distinct crispy texture and hint of decadence, almost any fried packaged food makes an excellent casserole topper. The classic choice of fried onions is always a safe bet, but you can also branch out to options like fried jalapeños, bacon bits, or even packaged chow mein noodles.
- Crackers. Rich and buttery Ritz Crackers are a go-to choice for topping casseroles, but you can branch out in the cracker aisle. Consider the flavors of your casserole.
- Nuts. Naturally crunchy and unlikely to get soggy like the other foods on this list, nuts make a delicious choice for casserole topping. Good, neutral options include chopped walnuts or almond slivers.
- Breadcrumbs. Sure, you can easily sprinkle a few breadcrumbs on top of your casserole straight from the package, and it will give you a crunchy topping just as easily as Ritz or fried onions.
