FLUBBER

What happens to the Flubber when... it is stretched? it is rolled into a ball and bounced? it is stretched over the opening of the jar? an object (golf ball, etc.) is rolled on it? What else can you do with flubber? ...make it and find out! A Closer Look: Flubber is a polymer made by a chemical reaction. Polymers are very long chains of repeating units. When the two solutions are combined, polyvinyl acetate chains (a polymer from the white glue) are linked together in a 3-dimensional arrangement by borate ions (from the Borax) and other chemical bonds. This produces the thick, sticky polymer called Flubber. (You can get white glue in bulk from a school supplies source. Keep this stuff away from carpet and hair as it will stick. If necessary, white vinegar can act as a solvent.) Thanks to my cyberpal Julie for this recipe!

FLUBBER II (AND WINDBREAKERS)

Flubber is a blast to make and your kids will spend endless hours playing with it. It is the perfect indoor activity when the snow, rain, or (in my case) heat keeps you indoors. Your kids are limited only by their imaginations when they are given a big, rubbery pile of Flubber to play with. Even older kids will have a great time using it to play practical fart jokes (Windbreakers). Note: Use liquid watercolor for this recipe, do not use food coloring!!

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, mix together 1/3 cup of warm water and 3 TBSP of Borax.
  • Stir until dissolved.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the glue, 2 cups of warm water, and a few drops of liquid watercolor (until desired color is reached).
  • Slowly pour the Borax mixture into the glue mixture, stirring with your hand.
  • Lift and stretch the combined mixture until all or most of the liquid is absorbed.
  • Flubber can be used to make Windbreakers by forcing air pockets out of small round containers (yogurt containers work very well).
  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Important: Flubber will wash out of clothes, but it will not come out of carpet or upholstry.

Nutrition Facts : Sodium 11.1

2 cups all-purpose white glue
2 cups warm water
3 tablespoons borax
1/3 cup warm water
liquid watercolor, do not use food coloring

FLUBBER

There are other recipes for Flubber here, but this is the one I always use. From the Children's Museum of Houston. Great to do with the kids. Educational, too: "Combining the borax and glue with water causes a chemical reaction that forms a new compound with its own unique characteristics. Notice how the flubber can be molded and then returned to its original shape unlike glue, which becomes solid, or the powdery borax." I always buy school glue on sale before school starts and save it to make this through the year. I have never had this stain and it is easier to clean up than playdoh. Most fun at room temperature. Would be great as a party favor.

Steps:

  • Put the borax in 1/3 c of warm water and stir until dissolved. Then add several large squirts of food coloring and set aside.
  • Pour the remaining 2 cups of water into a container and add the 2 cups of school glue. Stir until dissolved.
  • Add the borax solution to the glue solution.
  • Mix with your hands. Remove all jewelry! Do not use a spoon! This is really fun.
  • It takes approximately 5 minutes for all of the water to be absorbed and for the mixture to reach the right consistency. Knead firmly to encourage suspension of the glue particles.
  • Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It should last two weeks or more.

Nutrition Facts : Sodium 11.1

1/3 cup water
3 tablespoons borax, laundry booster (find next to the laundry detergent)
2 cups water
2 cups school glue (I use 4 4-oz bottles of Elmer's school glue)
food coloring
