I was looking for a different way to serve fruit, and it just popped into my head! Why not use fruit skewers?

  • Thread the strawberries, cantaloupe, banana and apple pieces alternately onto skewers, placing at least 2 pieces of fruit on each skewer. Arrange the fruit skewers decoratively on a serving platter.

Steps:

  • Slice the cantaloupe and honeydew into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Using small flower-shaped cookie cutters, cut flowers from the melon slices. Using a paring knife, cut a wedge out of the stem end of each strawberry to form a heart shape. Cut the granola bars crosswise into equal squares.
  • Assemble by skewering the ingredients through the ice-pop sticks, alternating between melon flowers, strawberries and granola bars, in any combination.

Fruit Skewers for Children (And Adults Too!) - Child Safe image

Steps:

  • Peel and chop fruit.
  • Thread onto the ice-cream sticks. First the strawberries, then pineapple and lastly the kiwifruits.
  • Use a small paring knife to cut a hole into the centre of the fruits if they do not thread easily onto the ice-cream sticks.
  • Refrigerate until needed.
  • Suggestion-Serve with a yogurt as a dipping sauce.
  • Variation- can use any fruits of your choice. They just need to be approx 3 times wider than the ice-cream stick.
  • For older children you can use small wooden skewers.

Grilled Fruit Skewers with Spicy Maple Cumin Glaze image

Steps:

  • Build a charcoal fire for direct grilling. Soak the bamboo skewers in a bowl of water and set aside.
  • Combine the glaze ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well. Add the fruit and toss gently to coat with the glaze. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Thread the fruit on the soaked skewers, alternating each fruit type. Place the skewers on the grill and cook directly over medium-high heat for 1 1/2 minutes on each side, or until browned and caramelized. Serve warm.
