CHOCOLATE PLAY DOUGH (INEDIBLE)

If you're searching for a fun indoor activity, this is just the recipe you need for hours of imaginative play! Instead of a typical homemade, fruit-scented or pastel-colored play dough, I wanted something different. This chocolate version was perfect for my 4-year-old and I to play "bakery" and "candy shop"! I discovered this recipe at: http://www.theimaginationtree.com/2012/01/easy-chocolate-play-dough-recipe.html. The blogger who originally posted it proclaimed, "This stuff is the BEST! It looks great, smells wonderful and prompts so much imaginative play and only takes 4 minutes to make. Perfect!" Well, it's safe to say my little girl and I agree 100%!

Steps:

  • Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Stir in the vegetable oil.
  • Stir in the boiling water (adult only) and mix until combined.
  • When the dough has cooled a little, knead it on a clean surface until it loses all stickiness and becomes smooth and stretchy. No residue should come off on your fingers. If it is still sticky, add a little more flour. If it's too dry and crumbly, add more water (a tablespoon at a time).

Kool-Aid Scented Play Dough image

Steps:

  • In a pot, combine water, oil, Kool-Aid, and salt.
  • Heat and stir until salt dissolves.
  • Add Flour and cream of tartar all at once to above.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until well mixed and dough forms a ball, (this should only take a couple minutes).
  • Remove from heat once the dough forms into a ball.
  • Cool on a clean baking sheet, kneading the dough as soon as it is cool enough to handle.
  • Cool completely, and let your kids play away!
  • (On occasion, I've mixed in a matching essential oil to enhance the fruity scent if I only have one package of a Kool-aid flavour on hand.) Store this Play Dough in a resealable plastic baggy or plastic container.
  • It should last for a couple months, depending on how often your children play with it.

EDIBLE KOOL-AID PLAY DOUGH

I made this often as a preschool teacher and now make it regularly with my own children. Smells great and you can vary the colours depending on which flavour kool-aid you choose. My little girls current favourite is grape as it makes "purple playdough!" At Christmas we make it red or green and add peppermint extract and glitter! Orange at Halloween and we even found some Halloween coloured glitter.Pick up some seasonal cookie cutters from the dollar store and your all set. Lots of possibilities and FUN!
