FLOWER SUGAR COOKIE

Transform your favorite sugar-cookie dough into sweet flowers with just the tip of a knife and some round candies.

Steps:

  • Roll room-temperature dough (for a blush hue, add 1 or 2 drops of pink food coloring) into 1-inch balls.
  • Cut 6 evenly spaced radial slits in each, about three-quarters of the way to the center.
  • Press a finger into the centers to spread out the petals, then drop a candy in each indentation.
  • Before baking, refrigerate on a parchment-lined baking sheet until firm. Bake according to the recipe.

DANDELION FLOWER COOKIES

As a kid, I spent countless hours picking dandelions and putting them in cups, leaving them on the kitchen counter as a surprise for my mom. Kids LOVE dandelions, after all, they are some of the only "flowers" they are allowed to pick whenever they will. I thought this sounded like a great project for kids, and can't wait to try these cookies at the first sight of these "flowers"! From what I've heard, these are NOT very sweet. Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Mix the oil and honey and then beat in the 2 eggs and vanilla.
  • Remove the yellow flower parts from the green parts (compost the green parts).
  • Stir in the flour, oatmeal, and dandelion flowers.
  • Drop the batter by tablespoonfuls onto an oiled cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 10-15 minutes.

  • Heat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, break up cookie dough; thoroughly work in flour. (DO NOT EAT RAW COOKIE DOUGH AFTER COMBINING WITH FLOUR.) Divide dough into 36 (1-inch) smooth, crease-free balls.
  • Place colored sugars in separate medium bowls. One at a time, gently drop the balls into the sugar, and toss until evenly coated.
  • Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. With thin sharp knife dipped into flour, cut each ball into 8 wedges, cutting three-fourths of the way down into ball but not through bottom. Gently indent center of each ball with thumb.
  • Bake 10 to 14 minutes or until set and edges just begin to brown. Immediately press 1 jelly bean in center of each cookie. Cool 1 minute; carefully remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks. Cool completely, about 10 minutes. Store in tightly covered container.
