This recipe is so good that I truly enjoy sharing it with others. I've always liked Salisbury steak, but I had to search a long time to find a recipe this tasty. It's handy, too because it can be prepared ahead, kept in the refrigerator and warmed up later. -Denise Barteet, Shreveport, Louisiana

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the soup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and horseradish. Set aside. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg. Add the bread crumbs, onion, salt, pepper and 1/4 cup of the soup mixture. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties. , In a large skillet, brown the patties in oil; drain. Combine remaining soup mixture with water; pour over patties. Cover and cook over low heat until meat is no longer pink and a thermometer reads 160°, 10-15 minutes. Remove patties to a serving platter; serve sauce with meat. Sprinkle with parsley.

This is a very old recipe. I remember when I was first out on my own about 27 years ago, I made this dish. It is still just as good today. I had lost my original recipe which had come from a newspaper clipping, but just recently found it online at cheftochef.net. They received it from "Reminisce" Magazine posted by Debbie Carlson - Cooking Echo==Cortesy of Dale & Gail Shipp, Columbia MD.

Steps:

  • For the meat mixture: Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon and some salt and pepper. Knead until all combined. Form into 4 to 6 oval patties, and then make lines across the patties to give them a "steak" appearance.
  • Fry the patties in a skillet with the butter and oil over medium-high heat on both sides until no longer pink in the middle. Remove from the skillet and pour off any excess grease.
  • For the gravy: Reduce the heat to medium and add in the sliced onions. Stir and cook until golden brown and somewhat soft, for several minutes. Add the beef stock, ketchup, seasoning sauce, if using, and the Worcestershire. Then combine the cornstarch with a little beef broth and add to the sauce if using. Stir and cook to reduce.
  • Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper and more broth if needed for thinning. Then return the patties to the gravy. Spoon the gravy over the top and let them simmer and heat back up for a couple of minutes.

  • Mix ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, and onion soup mix together in a bowl; shape into 6 oblong patties.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties until browned, about 5 minutes per side.
  • Stir golden mushroom soup and water together in a bowl; pour over the patties in the skillet. Turn patties to coat in the liquid. Bring liquid to a simmer, reduce heat to medium-low, place a cover on the skillet, and cook until steaks are very firm, hot, and grey in the center, 10 to 15 minutes.   • Mix the meat and seasonings egg and bread.
  • Form oval patties in cast iron or oven proof skillet.
  • Brown formed patties on each side.
  • Don't cook all the way through.
