SUN TEA AKA SOLAR TEA

World's BEST Iced Tea! You don't really need a recipe for this but I wanted to include it in the cookbook I'm doing to honor my grandmother.

Steps:

  • Use good quality tea bags. Fill gallon jar with cold water. Place tea bgs in jar, cover, and set in sun to brew. If you like a lot of lemon flavor you can add a slice of lemon to the water. Allow tea to sun brew for 3-4 hours. When tea looks dark enough for your taste remove tea bags. Place jar in refrigerator to cool. Serve with ice and lemon and/or sugar to suit your taste.

8 - tea bags, regular size
1 gallon water, cold

ICED SUN TEA

I find most recipes for sun tea to be weak and tasteless. I like this recipe and usually drink tons of it in warm weather.

Steps:

  • Remove any tags from the tea bags (prevents dye from leeching into the tea) and place them in the bottom of a clear, glass, 1/2 gallon pitcher.
  • Fill with cold water , add lemon and lime and cover with plastic wrap or lid (keeps gnats and other creepies out).
  • Place outdoors in the sun (can do out of the sun as well, but takes just a bit longer).
  • Allow to brew for 5-6 hours or until it is as dark as you like (warmer weather brews it faster).
  • Remove tea bags and fruit and serve tea over ice, sweetened with honey if desired (mix it in while tea is warm).
  • Tea will keep about 6 hours, after which the quality decreases rapidly.

Nutrition Facts :

6 small orange pekoe and black tea bags
3 small flavored herbal tea bags (fruit, rose hip or hibiscus flower are great)
1/2 fresh lemon (optional)
1/2 fresh lime (optional)
honey, amount to taste (optional)

Steps:

  • *Early in the day*: fill a gallon jar with water, tea bags and honey; cover and place jar out in a sunny spot.
  • Remove from outdoors, shake jug to be sure the honey is well-mixed; remove tea-bags (these can go in the compost).
  • Place jar in fridge to chill (well, duh!).
  • Serve over ice cubes or just chilled.
  • VARIATIONS: If you're using unflavored tea bags, you can add a flavor by adding several (or fewer) drops of your favorite flavoring extracts to the finished tea: raspberry, orange, blackberry or a combination.
  • MONEY-SAVING HINT: Leave the honey out and let everyone add their own sugar when they're served.

4 INSANELY DELICIOUS WAYS TO CHANGE UP YOUR SUN TEA THIS …

  • Add herbs to your sun tea recipe. I love a spring of fresh mint in my tea, but brewing your tea with the mint from the start is absolutely delicious. I’m also intrigued by this mint sun tea recipe at The Well Essentials.
  • Add fresh fruit to your sun tea recipe. We’re all about fresh fruit right now, and it’s so easy to slice up whatever you have on hand and add it to your sun tea pitcher before you pour in the water and tea bags.
  • Add fruit syrups or compotes to your sun tea recipe. One easy trick: Brew a big jar of plain sun tea to keep on hand in the fridge, then change things up with variations on individual servings.
  • Add spice to your sun tea recipe. I tend to default to plain old iced tea bags when I make sun tea, but I’m pushing myself to get more creative with the tea itself and not just the add-ins.
