My husband's German family calls this Oma's apfelkuchen, which translates to "Grandma's apple cake." They've been sharing the recipe for more than 150 years. I use Granny Smith apples, but any variety works. -Amy Kirchen, Loveland, Ohio

- Preheat oven to 350°. Let egg yolks stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Starting 1/2 in. from 1 end, cut apple halves lengthwise into 1/4-in. slices, leaving them attached at the top so they fan out slightly. Set aside., Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. In another bowl, sift flour, cornstarch, cream of tartar, baking powder and salt twice. Gradually beat into creamed mixture. Add milk; mix well (batter will be thick)., Spread batter into a greased 9-in. springform pan wrapped in a sheet of heavy-duty foil. Gently press apples, round side up, into batter. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs, 45-55 minutes. Cool on a wire rack 10 minutes. Loosen sides from pan with a knife; remove foil. Cool 1 hour longer. Remove rim from pan. Dust with confectioners' sugar.

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 10-inch springform pan.
- Beat 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup white sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl using an electric mixer until creamy and smooth. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating in the first egg thoroughly before adding the second. Whisk 2 cups flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a separate bowl; beat flour mixture into creamed butter mixture in several increments, alternating with sour cream, to make a batter.
- Spread half the batter in the prepared pan. Combine cranberries with 1/4 cup white sugar in a bowl and spread the cranberries over batter; top with remaining batter. Stir brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, almonds, 1 tablespoon butter, and cinnamon together in a bowl until the topping looks like crumbs. Sprinkle topping evenly over cake.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the cake is lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs, 50 to 55 minutes.

- Preheat oven to 350°. Place 2 cups flour and salt in a food processor; pulse until blended. Add 1 cup butter; pulse until butter is the size of peas. While pulsing, add just enough ice water to form moist crumbs. Press mixture onto bottom of a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Bake until edges are lightly browned, 20-25 minutes. Cool on a wire rack., In a large bowl, combine apples, 1 cup sugar and cinnamon; toss to coat. Spoon over crust. Place remaining flour, butter and sugar in food processor; pulse until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle over apples. Bake until golden brown and apples are tender, 60-70 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

- Beat milk, shortening, egg, and vanilla extract together in a bowl until smooth. Stir 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt into milk mixture until dough comes together. Spread dough out into the bottom of a rimmed baking sheet.
- Spread apples over the dough on the baking sheet.

- In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cake flour, sugar, salt and baking powder; cover and freeze 30 minutes. Place lard and butter in a separate bowl; freeze 30 minutes. Place flour mixture in a food processor; pulse until blended. Add lard and butter; pulse until mixture is the size of peas., Transfer flour mixture to a large bowl. Mix together egg yolk and 10 tablespoons ice water; gradually add to flour mixture. Toss with a fork until dough holds together when pressed, adding more water if needed. Divide dough into thirds. Shape each into a disk; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight. , In a large saucepan, combine apples, 3/4 cup apple juice, sugar, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg; bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Combine cornstarch and remaining 2 tablespoons juice until smooth; add to saucepan. Return to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook and stir 1 minute or until thickened. Remove from the heat; cool to room temperature. Stir in cranberries., On a lightly floured surface, roll 1 dough portion into a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim crust even with rim. Pour fruit filling into crust. , Roll out another portion of dough; make a lattice crust. Place over filling. Trim and seal edge. Roll out remaining portion of dough to a 14x4-in. rectangle. Cut four 14x1/4-in. strips. Place 2 strips side by side; twist together. Repeat with remaining 2 strips., For decorative cutouts, cut remaining dough out with a 1-1/2-in. leaf-shaped cookie cutter. With a sharp knife, lightly score cutouts to resemble veins on leaves. Combine egg and milk; lightly brush lattice and edge of crust with egg mixture. Place twists along edge of pie crust, pressing lightly to adhere. Overlap cutouts on the lattice and along edge of pie. - Grease 9-inch cake pan or springform pan with butter.
- In large bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/3 cup granulated sugar and the baking powder with whisk. Add cold cubed butter; cut in with pastry blender or 2 knives until coarse crumbs are formed.
- In small bowl, beat 1 egg, the water and vanilla. Pour over flour mixture, and stir until just moistened; mixture will be dry. Knead mixture until flour is incorporated and consistent dough forms. Press dough in bottom and 1 1/2 inches up side of pan. Refrigerate 15 minutes.
- Place pecans, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons flour and the orange peel in food processor fitted with steel blade attachment. Cover; process until nuts are finely ground. Add egg and softened butter; process again until blended. Spread mixture over chilled crust.
- Heat oven to 350°F.
- In medium bowl, mix cranberry sauce and orange juice until well combined and cranberry sauce is loosened. Spread over nut mixture, leaving 1 inch border.
- Cut apples into quarters, and place them cored side down on cutting board. Cut thin lengthwise slits in each quarter cutting to, but not through the cored side. Arrange apple quarters around outside edge of dough crust so they are just touching. Bake about 1 hour or until crust is lightly browned. Cool 10 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving. Store covered in refrigerator.

- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Mix 1 1/4 cup flour, baking powder, 2 tsp sugar, and salt and sift once.
- Cut 1/2 cup butter into dry mix with a pastry blender to pea size.
- In a small bowl, beat egg with 2 T milk and add to dry mix.
- Mix thoroughly and pat dough into a greased or oiled 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Pare and core apples.
- Cut into thin wedge slices and place on dough in rows until covered. We would cover the thin end of one apple with the thick end of the other.
- Dot apples with 2 T butter and mix 3/4 cup sugar, 1 1/2 Tbs flour and cinnamon together.
- Spread dry topping over dotted apples, and bake in oven for 30-45 minutes, until golden brown.
