DH'S BASIL AND LEMON BALM TEA FOR COLD RELIEF OR JUST DRINKING

My Dear Husband came up with this one winter when we caught head cold after head cold. Its especially soothing on a sore throat and as good as chicken soup for steaming open clogged sinuses. With or without the optional slug of whiskey or brandy it makes a head cold less unpleasant to cope with. And its tasty enough that you'll probably brew up a pot at other times too.

Steps:

  • Mix basil with lemon balm.
  • To brew tea, place the same amount of the mix as you would use for black tea into a tea ball. Put into your teapot and fill with boiling water. Let steep for 5-7 minutes.
  • Serve hot, sweetening with honey if desired.
  • Note -- Its traditional to add a shot of whiskey or brandy to your tea when you have a head cold, but DON'T do it if you're taking ANY cold medicine -- prescription or OTC!
  • Note -- "Cooking" time is boiling the water and brewing.

10 BEST TEAS FOR COLD AND FLU SYMPTOMS - GOOD …

From goodhousekeeping.com
Estimated Reading Time 7 mins
  • Peppermint. Just a few sips of peppermint tea can start to make you feel better. The menthol in the peppermint leaves can have a slight anesthetic effect on your throat, suppressing your cough (which is why peppermint appears in many cough drops).
  • Chamomile. The dried flowers of chamomile have been used for centuries to help lull you to sleep — flavonoids from the plant have a tranquilizing effect.
  • Echinacea. Echinacea comes from a purple flower found in North America and is used by Great Plains tribes as a traditional cure. Studies have shown that taking echinacea as a supplement can cut your chances of catching a cold by up to 58%, and can reduce the length of your cold by more than a day.
  • Ginger. Ginger tea is a favorite with singers to soothe their throats — the bioactive ingredients in it act as an anti-inflammatory and may also inhibit microorganisms that can lead to infection.
  • Elderberry. Like other small, dark berries, elderberries are filled with health-boosting antioxidants, ranking even higher than cranberry and blueberry for polyphenol content.
