CARAMEL BUTTER-PECAN BARS FOR A CROWD

These melt-in-your-mouth bars from Mary Jean Hlavac in McFarland, Wisconsin are simply to die for. They go together in 10 minutes, and even though the chocolate layer takes time to harden (think make-ahead convenience), these treats are definitely worth the wait.

Caramel Butter-Pecan Bars for a Crowd image

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and brown sugar; cut in butter until crumbly. Press into an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Top with pecans. Drizzle caramel topping evenly over pecans. , Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until caramel is bubbly. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Let stand for 5 minutes. Carefully spread chips over caramel layer. Cool at room temperature for at least 6 hours or until chocolate is set. Cut into bars.

This is the 1971 winner of the Pillsbury Bake-Off. It was created by Pearl Hall of Washington. It's described as "delicious as pecan pie" only easier to make and much more portable to eat in bar form.

Pecan Pie Surprise Bars (Pillsbury Bake-Off Winner) image

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350.
  • Grease 13 x 9 inch pan.
  • Reserve 2/3 cup of the dry cake mix for filling.
  • In a large bowl, combine remaining dry cake mix, margarine and 1 egg at low speed until well blended.
  • Press in bottom of greased pan.
  • Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes or until light golden brown.
  • In large bowl, combine reserved 2/3 cup dry cake mix, brown sugar, corn syrup, vanilla and 3 eggs at low speed until moistened.
  • Beat 1 minute at medium speed or until well blended.
  • Pour filling mixture over warm base; sprinkle with pecans.
  • Bake an additional 30-35 minutes or until filling is set.
  • Cool completely.
  • Cut into 36 bars.
  • Store in refrigerator.

1/3 cup margarine or 1/3 cup butter, softened

Steps:

  • Grease bottom and sides of 13x9x2 pan. Reserve 2/3 cup dry cake mix for filling. In large bowl, combine remaining dry cake mix, butter and 1 egg. Mix until crumbly. Press in prepared pan. Bake at 350 for 15- 20 mins. Prepare filling. Cobmine all ingredients beat at medium speed 1-2 mins. Pour filling over partially baked crust. Sprinkle with pecans. Return to oven and bake for 30-35 mins until filling is set. Cool. Cut into 36 bars.
