SWISS-ONION BREAD RING

My pull-apart bread recipe is crisp and golden on the outside, rich and buttery on the inside. Thanks to store-bought dough, this cheesy bread is a cinch to make. -Judi Messina, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Swiss-Onion Bread Ring image

Steps:

  • Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds in a greased 10-in. fluted tube pan. Cut the dough into forty 1-in. pieces; place half in prepared pan. Sprinkle with half of the cheese and onions. Top with 1 teaspoon poppy seeds; drizzle with half of the butter. Repeat layers. , Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately invert onto a wire rack. Serve warm.

Swiss-Onion Bread Ring image

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Sprinkle 1/2 tsp poppy seeds on the bottom of a greased 10 inch fluted tube pan.
  • Cut the bread dough into 1 inch pieces, you should have about twenty pieces.
  • Place half of bread pieces evenly into the prepared tube pan.
  • Sprinkle with half of the cheese and onions, and top with 1 tsp poppy seeds. Drizzle with half of the melted butter.
  • Repeat layers.
  • Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Immediately invert onto a wire rack.
  • Serve warm.

Steps:

  • Separate slices into rings, reserving small inner rings for another use if desired.
  • Stir together flour, baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Whisk together egg and milk in another bowl. Spread bread crumbs out on a plate.
  • Coating rings in batches of 4, dredge rings in flour mixture, shaking off excess, then dip in egg mixture, letting excess drip off, and dredge in crumbs, shaking off excess. Transfer to sheets of wax paper.
  • Heat 1 inch oil in a 5-quart pot over medium-high heat until it registers 360°F on thermometer. Fry rings in batches of 4 to 6, without crowding, turning over once or twice, until golden brown, about 3 minutes per batch. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

2 very large onions (2 pound total), cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 large egg
1 cup milk
1 3/4 cups plain fine dry bread crumbs
About 1 quart vegetable oil
Equipment: a deep-fat thermometer

Steps:

  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or pot to 365 degrees. Onion slices should be about 1/4 inch thick. Separate the onion slices into rings and set aside.
  • In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices in the flour mixture until completely coated and set aside.
  • Whisk the eggs and milk into the flour mixture.
  • Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat and place on a wire rack to let excess batter drip off.
  • Pour the bread crumbs in a large bowl. Gently toss battered onions into the bread crumbs and and coat evenly.
  • Deep fry a few rings at a time for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Place finished onion rings on paper towels to drain.
  • Season with seasoning salt and serve.
