- Garnish with sliced scallions and sriracha to taste.
SPICY GINGER SUNDAES WITH FIVE-SPICE CRISPS
Instead of mixing cinnamon with sugar, Ree rings the changes by creating a Chinese five-spice sugar to flavor the crisps to garnish her sundaes. The use of sambal adds a little heat and extra piquancy to the caramel.

- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the ginger and sambal and cook for a minute to release the flavor. Add the coconut sugar, cream and salt. Cook while whisking gently until thick and smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. Use warm or cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Mix the sugar and five-spice powder together in a small bowl.
- Add the tortillas to a sheet pan and brush the tops with half of the melted butter. Sprinkle the tortillas with half of the sugar mixture. Flip and repeat with the remaining butter and sugar mixture.
- Bake until very crisp and golden, 15 to 17 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely. Break apart and eat as a snack or with your favorite ice cream.
SPICY GINGER WHOOPEES
Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- To make the cookies: In a medium mixing bowl whisk together flour, salt, baking soda, dry spices, and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat with a hand mixer, the vegetable shortening and the coconut shortening together until creamy. Add molasses and brown sugar and beat until smooth. Add the eggs 1 at a time, the pumpkin puree and ginger. Mix until well blended. Slowly stir in the flour with a rubber spatula scraping the sides until all ingredients are well incorporated. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls, flatten slightly with the back of a spoon and place on a cookie sheet. Bake in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool cookies for 5 minutes on cookie sheet. Transfer cookies to wire racks and let cool.
- To make the icing: In a medium bowl, combine with a hand mixer, the sugar, meringue powder and just enough water to make a smooth, glossy icing. Transfer to a plastic baggie. Snip the corner of the bag with scissors and drizzle onto cookies.
SPICY GINGER CHICKEN WINGS
These wings are sweet, spicy and sticky but if you're into the sweet ginger but don't like spicy, just leave out the serrano chilies. Make sure to test your chilies, 'cause there can be a lot of variation in heat!
