PICNIC BASKET BREAD

My aunt has been making this wonderful bread for years. You can make it ahead and serve it cold. It makes a great appetizer, and is wonderful left over. It also travels well, and is a hit at pot-lucks!

Steps:

  • Remove dough from the machine after the dough or manual cycle is completed.
  • Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface, and carefully form into a ball without punching down.
  • Place onto greased cookie sheet and let rise about one hour or until doubled in size.
  • Brush with beaten egg and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let cool.
  • Hollow out cooled bread like a pumpkin, reserving"lid" to put back on.
  • Butter inside and fill with: i.e. fried chicken.
  • Replace lid and wrap in heavy duty foil, then news paper, then foil again.
  • Bread and chicken will stay warm all day!
  • Success Hints: Use to make edible soup bowls.

1 1/2 cups water
4 cups white bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons fast rise yeast or 3 teaspoons active dry yeast

68 PICNIC FOOD IDEAS TO PACK IN YOUR BASKET

From purewow.com
Author Katherine Gillen
  • Avocado Chicken Salad. Chicken salad is a classic picnic food, but we gave it a little upgrade: Creamy avocado, rice vinegar and lots of fresh dill make it taste modern but still familiar.
  • Tarragon Chicken Salad Sandwiches. Likewise, these chicken salad sammies are jazzed up with homemade tarragon mayonnaise (!) and quick-pickled onions. Don’t worry, everything’s super easy to make and assemble.
  • Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad Stuffed Peppers. To make these cuties picnic-friendly, wait until you’ve staked out a spot and laid out your blanket to assemble everything.
  • Five-minute Bean Salad. What’s the secret to a portable salad that’s ready in practically no time? Canned beans, of course.
  • Caesar Pasta Salad. When worlds collide—and by worlds, we mean two of our all-time favorite types of salad.
  • Corn And Tomato Salad With Feta And Lime. Corn on the cob is a summer staple, but corn off the cob is a picnic must. This time, pair it with briny feta and sweet, ripe tomatoes (and serve it room temp or cold).
  • Chilled Cucumber Salad. Soaring temperatures call for something crunchy and refreshing. This will do quite nicely.
  • Melon Salad With Chili Powder, Mint, Lime And Flaky Sea Salt. We know fruit salad can be a bit of a snooze, but not when you sprinkle it with chili powder.
  • Summer Millet Salad. Since they don’t necessarily need to be chilled, grain salads are a picnic basket no-brainer. This one is packed with feta and heirloom tomatoes, yum.
  • Minty-fresh Zucchini Salad With Marinated Feta. This is your sign to try raw zucchini. The summer squash soaks up the mint-infused olive oil in a way that’s kinda magical.
