Steps:

  • In a large teapot, combine the lemon grass with about 6 cups of rapidly boiling, fresh water. Cover the teapot with a thick towel and allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes, or until very aromatic. Pour into teacups, sweeten and serve with a twist of lemon, if desired.

3 stalks fresh lemon grass (available at Asian and some supermarkets) (see Note)
Raw sugar, honey, or other sweetener, as desired
Twists of lemon (optional)

THE GREENEST GRASS ON THE BLOCK (LAWN SPRAY)

With spring just around the corner, I thought I would post this. A good friend gave this "recipe" to me. It works wonders for keeping your lawn nice and green. ADD 4 ounces Listerine Mouthwash to the recipe, ZAAR wont allow it as an ingredient, so it isn't listed, but does need to be added.

Steps:

  • Mix all the ingredients together, including 4 ounces Listerine mouthwash, and put into an empty "Miracle Grow" container that attaches to your watering hose.
  • Spray your lawn with the mixture once every few weeks.
  • The ammonia acts like a fertilizer, the dish soap washes off pollutants, the beer kills the weeds.
  • DO NOT use diet soda, it needs the sugar, and the mouthwash kills the bugs.
  • Happy Lawn Growing!

1 cup ammonia
1 cup liquid dish soap
1 (12 ounce) can beer
1 (12 ounce) can cola
1 teaspoon instant tea

Steps:

  • Place the lemon grass and sugar in a teapot. Boil the water and pour into the teapot. Let the tea steep for at least 10 minutes. Pour the tea through a strainer and into teacups.

1/2 cup fresh lemongrass, thinly sliced
2 -3 tablespoons palm sugar or 2 -3 tablespoons white sugar
1 quart cold water

LUSCIOUS LEMONGRASS TEA

This tea I first had in Bali. It is refreshing and delicious hot or cold. Easy to make if you can find the lemongrass however most Asian markets should carry it. My mother who is diabetic loves the natural flavor of the lemongrass without the sugar. Be careful about adding the ginger as it will give an almost "hot and spicy" flavor to the tea! Try the tea without first and then next time try it with the ginger.

Steps:

  • Boil 1 liter water.
  • While the water is boiling, clean the stalks of lemongrass under running water then cut and discard the green upper part of the stalks, you only want to use the whitest part.
  • Next, using a meat tenderizer or hammer of any sort gently smash the stalks on your cutting board.
  • Place the smashed stalks of lemon grass inside the tea pot along with the peeled ginger if you decide to use it.
  • Pour the boiling water over and allow to steep for 5 minutes.
  • Pour into tea cups and serve with or without sweetener (the honey or sugar).
  • In Bali, this"tea" would not be served with sugar, it tastes fabulous just as it is.
  • Tip: As with iced tea, this"tea" can be served cold.

4 stalks lemongrass
1 liter water
4 teaspoons sugar or 4 teaspoons honey (very optional)
3 slices fresh ginger, peeled 1/4 inch slices (optional)

  • It has antioxidant properties. According to a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, lemongrass contains several antioxidants, which can help scavenge free radicals in your body that may cause disease.
  • It has antimicrobial properties. Lemongrass tea may help treat oral infections and cavities, thanks to its antimicrobial properties. According to a 2012 in vitro study published by the National Institutes of Health, lemongrass essential oil showed antimicrobial abilities against Streptococcus mutans bacteria, the bacteria most responsible for tooth decay.
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is thought to play a role in many conditions, including heart disease and stroke. According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, two of the main compounds in lemongrass, citral and geranial, are thought to be responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • It may reduce your cancer risk. The citral in lemongrass is also thought to have potent anticancer abilities against some cancer cell lines. Several components of lemongrass help fight cancer.
  • It may help promote healthy digestion. A cup of lemongrass tea is a go-to alternative remedy for upset stomach, stomach cramping, and other digestive problems.
  • It may act as a diuretic. In the world of natural health, lemongrass is a known diuretic. A diuretic makes you urinate more often, ridding your body of excess fluid and sodium.
  • It may help reduce high systolic blood pressure. In a 2012 observational study, 72 male volunteers were given either lemongrass tea or green tea to drink.
  • It may help regulate your cholesterol. High cholesterol may increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. A study published in the Journal of Advanced Pharmaceutical Technology & Research showed that lemongrass oil extract helped to lower cholesterol in animals.
  • It may help you lose weight. Lemongrass tea is used as a detox tea to kick-start your metabolism and help you lose weight. Even so, most research on lemongrass and weight loss is anecdotal, not scientific.
  • It may help relieve symptoms of PMS. Lemongrass tea is used as a natural remedy for menstrual cramps, bloating, and hot flashes. There isn’t any research specifically on lemongrass and PMS, but, in theory, its stomach-soothing and anti-inflammatory properties may help.
